FIRE PREVENTION
- Install smoke detectors. A smoke detector may save your life if you’re asleep.
- Don’t smoke in bed. You can easily fall asleep with a lit cigarette.
- Never dispose of your cigarette butts into paper waste baskets as they can easily cause fires.
- Never leave cooking unattended. An overheated pan can ignite a flame inside the pan and cause major fire damage.
- Never use water to extinguish a grease fire as it accelerates the fire. In order to stop the spread of a grease fire, put a lid on the pan and turn off the gas or electrical power.
- Keep the cooking area clean. Always wipe appliances and surfaces after cooking to prevent grease buildup.
- Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children.
- Make sure curtains cannot be blown over the candle by wind. Place candles on secure furniture and out of the reach of children and pets. Extinguish all candles before leaving the house or when going to bed.
- Clean the lint filter of your clothes dryer on a regular basis otherwise the lint can blow into the interior of the dryer cabinet and cause a fire.
- Never leave your clothes dryer running while no one is home.
- Avoid overheating by using extension cords of the proper size for the load they will carry and by using cords as short as practical.
- Avoid using "octopus plugs" which allow many cords to be plugged into a single receptacle.
- Unplug all electrical appliances when a thunderstorm is approaching.
- Never leave an unattended iron. Unplug it at all times. Never put a hot iron on a surface that can easily burn like plastics and some counter tops.
