Enter each Hurricane Season prepared
- Make sure you have sufficient up-to-date Insurance Coverage on your house and contents.
- Recheck your supply of multiplex boards and broad adhesive tapes for windows, tools, first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, batteries for radio and flashlights and non-perishable foods, such as canned food.
- Make sure that the fuel tank of your car is full.
- Arrange plans for your pets.
When a Hurricane Watch is issued
Continue normal activities, but stay tuned to your radio for weather advisories and track the storm online by clicking here. Keep alert. Ignore rumors.
When a Hurricane Warning is issued
- Avoid the last-minute hurry and keep calm.
- Leave areas that may be swept by high tides or storm waves.
- Cover al windows with boards or use broad adhesive tapes to protect them from shattering glass.
- Moor your boat securely before the storms arrive, or evacuate it to a safe area.
- Secure outdoor objects that might be blown away or uprooted. Garbage cans, garden tools, toys, signs, gas tanks, porch furniture, TV antenna, satellite dish and a number of other harmless items become missiles of destruction in hurricane winds. Anchor them or store them inside before the storm strikes. In case a satellite dish is difficult to remove, put it in a horizontal position.
- Store drinking water in clean jugs, bottles, and cooking utensils.
- Check your battery-powered equipment: - radios, emergency cooking facilities, flashlights and keep your car fueled.
- Cover your electronic equipment and valuables with plastic.
- Keep your pets inside.
- Monitor the storm’s position through advisories from your radio and online tracker.
- If your home is sturdy and on high ground, locate a safe room with no windows or small window; if it is not, move to a designated shelter, and stay there until the storm is over and the ‘eye’ of the hurricane has passed.
- Use the phone only for emergencies.
When the hurricane has passed
- Seek necessary medical care at Red Cross disaster stations or hospitals.
- Stay out of disaster areas.
- Drive carefully along debris-filled streets.
- Avoid loose or dangling wires, and report them immediately to your power company or the nearest law enforcement officer.
- Prevent fires.
- Check refrigerated foods for spoilage if power has been off during the storm.
